Pokes Putt in Boulder

The Colorado Buffalos ended their two game loosing streak at the hands of the Wyoming Cowboys Saturday in Boulder. Colorado whose head coach Dan Hawkins was rumored to be on the hot seat after loosing to Colorado State and Toledo walked all over the Pokes winning 24-0.

The Cowboys fell to 1-2 with the loss and head coach Dave Christensen yanked quarterback Robert Benjamin for Freshman Austyn Carta-Samuels after Benjamin completed just 1 of 4 passes for 2 yards.

The Pokes offense could not be found in the first half as they managed only 61 yards of offense and three first downs.

Carta-Samuels and Benjamin still has not tossed a touchdown pass in 2009 but neither has tossed and interception either.

The Poke next face UNLV in Laramie September 26th, a team they lost to 22-14 in their meeting in 2008.

Horns to Much for Pokes

Laramie, WY – The No. 2 team in the nation was too much for the Wyoming Cowboys Saturday as the Texas Longhorns downed the Cowboys 41-10. The Cowboys came out fired up sticking it to Texas holding them to field goals early.

Wyoming special teams kept them in the game. True freshman Luke Ruff was called for a rouging the punter early in the 1st quarter, but his effort paid off in the second as he blocked a punt with a 1:32 left in the half at the Wyoming 6 yard line and true freshman Ghaali Muhammad took it in for the touchdown giving the Cowboys their only lead, 10-6.

That blocked punt woke up the Longhorns offense as they went down the filed before halftime to score and go into the locker room at halftime up 13-10.

After the half, Wyoming seemed to come out flat as Texas marched down the field and scored another Touchdown putting them up 20-10 and it just went down hill from that point on.

In all Texas senior quarterback Colt McCoy McCoy engineered four unanswered second-half touchdown drives to finally give the Texas nation something to cheer for and the national audience at home a push of reality.

After the clock struck 0:00 and the game was over; Wyoming saw that they were not able to hang with the big boys. In all their offense put 3 points on the board and that was only after Texas tried a fake punt deep in Poke territory that Wyoming stopped.

The Poke D’ showed promise keeping the Cowboys in the game throughout the first half. But the speed and power of Texas was too much for the Pokes.

Wyoming will play their first game on the road next weekend as they travel to Boulder, Co to take on the 0-2 Colorado Buffaloes.

Cowboys Set for the Longhorns; Laramie is Excited

The Wyoming Cowboys are set to take on the Texas Longhorns Saturday at War Memorial Stadium. Even though the Cowboys are 34 point underdogs the anticipation in Laramie is huge. A 2nd ranked team is the highest ranked team ever to play the Cowboys in Laramie.

The Longhorns are staying at a local hotel and the Cowboys went over the summit to stay in Cheyenne. The reason for the Cowboys staying in Cheyenne according to head coach Dave Christensen is that Texas had the hotel booked that the Cowboys stay in before Christensen was hired.

Local business has picked up and the traffic is bad for Laramie, but all is made up knowing that in just over 12 hours the Pokes will be playing one of the biggest games in their history. Not only are we excited here is Laramie, we hope to see a good game.

We not only wish our Pokes luck but we have to add GO POKES LASSO THEM LONGHORNS!!!

Longhorns Coming to
Laramie

The No. 2 team in the nation the Texas Longhorns will pay a visit to Laramie this Saturday to take on the Wyoming Cowboys. The Cowboys under new head coach Dave Christensen come into the game off a win where the team put 29 points on the board against FCS opponent Weber State. Texas comes to Laramie after beating La. Monroe 59-20.

The Cowboys offense which sputtered in 2008 under former coach Joe Glenn put up over 400 yards of offense against Weber State and only committed one turnover something they were prone to do in 2008.

Texas looked like the No. 2 team against La. Monroe spreading the rock around as the put up over 500 yards of offense. QB Colt McCoy passed for 317 yards and 2 Touchdowns in the season opening win. Jordan Shipley caught eight passes for a career-high 180 yards and a TD while the Horns also racked up 199 yards on the ground.

The Cowboys used two QB’s in Junior College transfer Robert Benjamin and Freshman Austyn Carta-Samuels combined for 189 yards passing but no Touchdowns.

Most do not give the Cowboys a chance to win Saturday as at last check the Longhorns were favored by about 33 points. But never count the Pokes out.

Texas is coming to War Memorial Stadium, the highest stadium in altitude in college football. If Coach Christensen can get the spread offense working Saturday he could run the Longhorns defense ragged.

Reason No. 2 I say that the Cowboys have a chance is that Coach Christensen will know some of the formations of Texas, as he was an assistant coach at Missouri for many years and had to play this same Texas team.

And the final reason why the Cowboys may have a shot at beating Texas, it would be the biggest win the history of Wyoming Cowboys football. And no matter how bad Texas may want this win, sometimes the stars line up for the underdog… and we here at PokePride.com home those stars line up this weekend.

In closing there are only two words that can sum things up for all Wyoming fans…

GO POKES!!!

Wyoming Opens Season with Win

The Dave Christensen era has began at Wyoming. The Cowboys opened their 2009 season Saturday at home with a 29-22 win of the Weber State Wildcats. Wyoming who averaged less then 13 points per game last season put 29 up in their first game using the new spread offense. The Cowboys defense forced 5 turnovers while the offense only turned the ball over once. in the win. It may be to early for fans to get to excited but a win is a win. The No. 2 team in the nation will come to War Memorial Stadium this Saturday as the Cowboys will host the Texas Longhorns. This will be a true test of how much the Pokes have improved.
